Mississippi Squirrel Revival
Mississippi Squirrel Revival

When things seem too serious, you need to step back and see life with a sense of humor and that's just what you'll find happening at http://www.dreamcloud.net/dreamer/squirrel/squirrel.html where you can listen to the story of the day the squirrel went berserk in the First Self Righteous Church.

American Legion on the ACLU
American Legion Magazine - February 2005

Speaking of the ACLU, there is an interesting article in the American Legion Magazine describing just how much money the ACLU is collecting in its litigation. The magazine states "The public general does not know the ACLU is profiting in such cases by millions of dollars in taxpayer-paid 'attorney fee awards' authorized under the Civil Rights Act, 42 U.S. Code Sec. 1988." The article (linked above) notes that the ACLU received more than 1.5 million in attorney fees in four cases alone.

ACLU Scare Tactics
http://www.aclu.org/pizza/images/screen.swf

The ACLU is using a scare tactics flash presentation to oppose the Multistate Anti-Terrorism Information Exchange. The ACLU argues that this initiative would create a vast database that could be augmented by commercial databases such that many details of private lives could be catalogued. The flash presentation leads to a generalized set of concerns with vague references to news stories, but falls short of presenting any useful information on exactly what information is being used and by whom. Notably the call to action page neglects to explain just how a pizza place (depicted in the scare-tactics presentation) would get access to law enforcement information.

This presentation might have made sense, if there was a call to action to limit how commercial data on your purchases is used by businesses, but that is not what the ACLU is doing. Instead it looks like a bait and switch presentation to me.

Geography Puzzle for Kids
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com

Try out this flash based game to see how fast you can accurately place all fifty states on a map. It is a drag-n-drop exercise and you'll be dinged, if your placement is off target, so be careful. Nice use of flash for educational purposes.

The TRUE Stella Awards -- Opportunists vs. the American Justice System
http://www.stellaawards.com/

And for a bit more on the strangeness of the human condition, turn to the Stella Awards where wild and ridiculous lawsuits are held up to scrutiny and some well-earned ridicule. Currently the site features the 2003 awards with an archive to the 2002 awards. The 2004 awards should be released soon. Here you can read about some of the strangest and most outrageous of lawsuits hitting the courts.

Toolbar to Help Foil Phishing
http://toolbar.netcraft.com

If you are worried about the bona fides of the websites you visit, you'll want to visit the above website and install its toolbar for Internet Explorer. The Netcraft toolbar shows the age of a website (most phishing websites are new), the site's rank in terms of visits, the country where it is hosted, and the name of the hosting company. Netcraft represents that the toolbar will trap suspicious URLs, force the display of browser navigational controls in all windows, and will clearly let you know the site's hosting location.

Chinese Watermelon Sculptures
http://www.americade.info/melons.htm

You never know what you'll find on the web or what form art may take. Check out the above website for over thirty wonderful pictures of watermelon carving, each an artistic work of its own. While we delight in pumpkin carving for Haloween, this art form seems to be a year-round bit of fun and the pictures are sure to please.

Cowboy Wisdom

A lot of wisdom in these cowboy "pearls"

  • Don't name a pig you plan to eat

  • Country fences need to be horse high, pig tight, and bull strong

  • Life is not about how fast you run,or how high you climb,  but how well you bounce

  • Life is simpler when you plough around the stump.

  • A bumblebee is faster than a John Deere tractor.

  • Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled.

  • Meanness don't happen overnight.

  • Forgive your enemies.  It messes with their heads.

  • Don't sell your mule to buy a plough.

  • Don't corner something meaner than you.

  • It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.

  • You can't unsay a cruel thing.

  • Every path has some puddles.

  • When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.

  • The best sermons are lived, not preached.

  • Most of the stuff people worry about never happens.

  • Don't squat with your spurs on.

  • Don't judge people by their relatives.

  • Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

  • Live a good, honorable life.  Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.

  • Don't interfere with something that ain't botherin' you none.

  • Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

  • It's better to be a has-been than a never-was.

  • The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm.  The colder it gets, the harder it is to swallow.

  • If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.

  • If it don't seem like it's worth the effort, it probably ain't.

  • It don't take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep.

  • Sometimes you get and sometimes you get got.

  • The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with watches you shave his face in the mirror every morning.

  • If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.

  • Don't worry about bitin' off more'n you can chew; your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger'n you think.

  • Only cows know why they stampede.

  • Always drink upstream from the herd.

  • If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya.

  • Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

  • Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it  back in.

  • You can't tell how good a man or a watermelon is 'till they get thumped.

  • Never miss a good chance to shut up.

Cardstacking Reaches New Heights
http://www.cardstacker.com/gallery.html

The photos on this website of card stacking masterpieces are simply amazing. No doubt this guy has a lot of free time on his hands and steady hands at that. He has built skyscrapers and even a stadium with playing cards. For a little diversion from the daily hum-drum, this is an excellent website.

Websites that Repel Customers
SIRIUS Satellite Radio

One would think that the main job of a website is to attract and lure in customers. If that is true, then the above website has failed because it has taught me in a few short minutes that if I want enjoyable satellite radio, I don't want to buy Sirius Radio.

The site developer has gone overboard with Flash making the site more difficult to use. Sirius plays cute with hide-the-ball navigation. Try it yourself. See whether you can figure out where to login from just looking at the page and then try to use the navigation to see whether they have classical music without clicking - just from looking at the navigation. Hint - you have to want to listen to their brand of entertainment to find a login link. Try clicking on a music link and see whether you can find music from the 80s or 70s? Sorry that wasn't important to the site developer.

From what I had heard, Sirius was supposed to offer commercial free radio so that you could just enjoy listening to your favorite tunes. What the site tells you is that you'll get nauseated with Howard Stern, strung out on Eminem's uncensored stuff, shot full of testosterone with sports (sorry ladies, this is something for brainless guys) and bored with a sophomoric demolition radio program. Somehow that does not equate to relaxing or enjoyable to me.

The emphasis seems to be on uncensored bad language. Just listen to us and we'll serve up some real crap seems to be the message. Sorry I can't get serious about a radio service that dolls out excrement as a cheap substitute for the real stuff. I'll buy CDs or listen to a station that my wife can enjoy too. I guess I should thank the developers of the site - they saved me from spending money on something I can live without.

Tsunami Aid Groups - Donate
CNN.com - Aid Groups

CNN published a list of aid groups accepting donations for victims of the earthquakes and tsunamis that devestated parts of South Asia and East Africa today. Consider a donation to one of these groups.

Be aware at the same time that scammers are phishing for your dollars. SC Magazine reports that over 400 phony phishing e-mails have been identified that solicite your donation for tsunami victims. The illicitly acquired funds are deposited into bank accounts in Cyprus and Malta according to SC Magazine - Scammers prey on tsunami disaster fundraising efforts.
