Year In Review ala Google
http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html

Follow the link above to visit the Google Press Center: Zeitgeist, where you'll find Google's catalog of what searches were most popular over the last year. Sorry folks, most web surfers weren't looking for information on how to solve the ultimate problem, trying to admire Nobel Peace Prize winners, or tackling thorny intellectual issues. Nope, it appears that five of the top ten queries of the year were for popular women with queries for chat, games, Orlando Bloom, Harry Potter and Mp3 rounding out the mix. Bush and Kerry didn't make the cut for the top ten popular men when it came to searches. But take heart, for public figure searches "W" came in first followed by Janet Jackson. Kerry trailed at third. There's lots more and the results are fascinating. Perhaps what we look for on the web tells us a little about what we are.

Make A Difference - Support the American Red Cross - Help Tsunami Victims

More than 71,000 people are known to have lost their lives in East Africa and South Asia in the aftermath of the earthquake and resulting tsunamis on December 26 and the death toll is expected to rise to over 100,000 according to the International Red Cross in Geneva. The American Red Cross reports that emergency assessment and first-aid teams were on the ground quickly and are already working with local groups to support relief efforts. If you would like to help, you can make a financial donation to the American Red Cross using the Amazon Honor System. One hundred percent of donations made will go to the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts.

CNN reports that the International Red Cross has also set up a website to help families locate missing people at www.familylinks.icrc.org. Apparently traffic to this website has been very high with many registrations overwhelming the host server. At the time of this writing the website is running very slowly.

With all the talk about how stingy the "rich" countries have been, I was amazed to find an article on Al Jazeera cataloging the amount of aid provided by various countries. Notably Japan is contributing $40 million, the European Union is contributing $41 million, the U.S. is contributing $35 million, Britan is contributing $29 million. Australia is contributing $27 million, and then there is France contributing 100,000 Euros. Like most reports, this only catalogs direct government aid contributions and does not take into account other contributions. Some estimates suggest that aid through charities in the U.S. may add up to more than government aid. Likewise catalogs like this do not take into account the costs of aid teams, ships, aircraft, and other support for disaster relief efforts.

We Never Learn
http://www.govexec.com/features/1104-01/1104-01s2.htm

Not so many years ago fax machines were hailed as a communications revolution. When the luster wore off, people realized that this gift of technology was a double-edged sword with increased expectations for instant communication and a loss of personal time.

Next we experienced the first wave of e-mail communication and it too was hailed as a revolution in communication. Again it was a double-edge sword bringing both good and bad. Again people learned that it could be an electronic tether at the office and now many offices bemoan the fact that productivity is lost to untold hours of e-mail handling.

And now we have another wave with the explosion in use of handheld wireless e-mail devices. Those who did not learn the first two times are apparently doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. The above link to a Government Executive story makes this all too clear with a very interesting account of how government senior executives are as addicted to their BlackBerry devices as some people are to crack. There is even a new nickname for somebody who is pathetically obsessed with a BlackBerry - CrackBerry.

No doubt we'll soon hear about CrackBerrys Anonymous.

Is It Christmas?

A little over two millenia ago things were not so different from how they are now. Then there was no room in the Inn and the baby Jesus was born in the most humble of surroundings in a manger where cattle were kept. Today the news is that the 900+ stores of the Target chain have no room in the Inn for Salvation Army bell ringers. And they are not the only ones that ban solicitation. You won't find Salvation Army bell ringers at Barnes & Noble, Loews, Kohls, Circuit City, Home Depot, Victoria's Secret, Limited, Bath & Body, or Toys R Us according to USAToday.

Maybe in corporate board rooms folks have forgotten what Christmas is? Is it about making huge profits and retail binge shopping? Hit the "Wrong" buzzer please. Sure we know the reality is that stores count on huge sales at Christmas, but you have to ask why are people buying? Could it be that a sizeable amount of the buying is for the purpose of giving gifts? And could it just be that one of the most important gifts we can all give is to tuck a few coins or bills into a red kettle to help those who are really in need and less fortunate?

Like Jacob Marley in Dicken's A Christmas Carol, these corporate board room scrooges are forging chains of misery through miserly short-sightedness. We can only hope that the ghosts of Christmas inspire them to relent and realize that the real spirit of Christmas is in giving, in hope, and in remembering a simple birth in a stable when there was no room in the Inn.

For me, I am inspired to shop where I see the spirit of giving with that familiar old red kettle and the tinkle of a bell that promises hope. And if you would like to donate, but can't find a red kettle, vist online at www.877redkettle.com or call 877-RED-KETTLE to make a donation.

Boy Scouting and War Effort
http://www.bsalegal.org/downloads/bsa_military_tribute.swf

In the wake of efforts by the ACLU to get DOD to quit supporting the Boy Scouts of America, good people are asking why the ACLU can support the rights of racist KKK groups or neo-nazis, but can't support an organization that has supported the cause of freedom by rolling up its sleeves to support the military through bond drives, scrap drives, and the kind of character that is so coveted in military leadership. BSA has produced a flash website in response to this assault that is compelling and and worth watching.
