HDTV - Computer Monitor?
Shop ATI - HDTV Accessories

If you have one of the wonderful new widescreen TVs and are thinking about using it as a computer monitor, finding the right information on how to hook things up can be daunting. ATI now offers a DVI HDTV adapter that works with some of its video display cards. If you have an ALL-IN-Wonder R8500, R9500, R9600, R9700, or R9800 card, the adapter provides component video feed for your widescreen. ATI advertises that with component video output, it supports some (but not all) common widescreen resolutions.

Hooking up to a an HDTV isn't without problems and if you are a gamer, you may want to dig a little deeper. If so, I would recommend the helpful article at:

http://htpcnews.com/main.php?id=atisettings

Be aware that many widescreen vendors warn that the monitor can be damaged, if you don't hook things up correctly and any damage you do is probably not covered by warranty. You might want to check with the manufacturer before hooking up as a precaution.

Securing Your Laptop
Laptops are prime targets for theft, especially when you are travelling. If you would like to have some chance of recovering your laptop, should it be stolen, you may want to have a look at software offerings designed to help you recover your laptop. These software applicaitons depend on the theif hooking your laptop up to the Internet. Once that happens the laptop will report its connecting IP address allowing it to be traced. (Of course, this assumes that the thief is lazy and doesn't wipe the hard drive or simply replace the hard drive.)

The Interview With God
http://www.theinterviewwithgod.com/

This website does a superb job of using Flash to convey a very powerful message of faith. The author imagines what it might be like to interview God and what answers he might hear. The presentation conveys much love and compasion. I'm not sure what the author's faith is because the presentation isn't there to to convert one to a particular religion. Rather it is one that is there to cause you to think. Well done.

Opera Web Browser
Opera Web Browser

The first stumbling block with this browser was downloading it. If you go with the default Simtel download link you'll get a bewildering page full of links to the Simtel site and ads for other software. The one thing missing was a link to Opera. Hmm. Picking a mirror link worked better.

The install went quickly and was relatively painless. At the tail end of the install you'll learn that with the free version you get ads built into your browsing experience. The ads sit on a bar taking up valuable real estate. You'll also find a verticle toolbar consumes space. All in all your browsing area is a little more cramped than with other browsers.

There is a nifty status bar that shows your download speed and it is faster than other browsers. But the dang bar disappears before you can read it half the time. It would have been nice to have a little delay so that you could see how many files you downloaded and the like.

For most sites it renders them nicely, but when it comes to pages with CSS or dropdown javascript menus, it can produce some odd results if the web author wasn't being carefully with coding. And in some cases it ignores CSS completely; e.g., custom colorization of scroll bars.

Based on a first look, it is a respectable browser, but my preference would be for FireFox. FireFox comes without the annoying ads and imports your bookmarks/favorites making for a more seemless transition. FireFox stumbles less on CSS issues and is a little more forgiving of coding problems so common on so many websites.

Firefox - The Browser, Reloaded

With all the recent security problems hitting Internet Explorer, you may be looking for an alternative browser that can do the job well. If so, take a look at Mozilla Firefox. It is a barebones browser that renders web pages accurately, incorporates pop-up blocking, has tabbed browsing, and uses smart searching with Google. There are many extensions and themes available to customize this browser to suit your needs. The download is under 5 MB and setup time is minimal. Take it for a test drive and you'll probably find yourself using it frequently as your primary browser.

The Value of Competition - High Stakes in Webmail
Google's Gmail is still in beta testing, but it is rocking the web e-mail industry with its free 1 GB of storage. Yahoo countered with increased free storage of up to 100 MB. Microsoft's "MSN Hotmail" is now offering 250 MB free storage on free accounts and for paying accounts the storage will now go up to 2 GB. Along with increased storage comes better anti-spam and anti-virus features designed to keep a customer base happier. Yahoo and MSN Hotmail have also launched their own competing toolbars that can be added to Internet Explorer. Go Google!
