The link above goes to a flash presentation that is an apt rememberance. Remembering Heroes Our news media seems to think that we only need to hear about bad guys. Did you ever notice that most news media can't wait to give you details about a very few bad soldiers in Iraq and that the coverage just goes on night after night? What about our heroes? What about the acts of courage and determination? What about all the individual efforts by service personnel to help people? We have set aside Memorial Day to remember those who have served and who have protected the most important, precious thing we all enjoy - freedom! Take a minute as an individual to count, to do something, to remember those who have fought for you and remind the media that you too need to hear about heroes, that you need to hear about successes, that you need to hear the good things our service members do, and that they too have a responsibility to help keep freedom alive. Virtual Church Opens on Web http://shipoffools.com/church/ Sponsored by the United Methodist Church, the shipoffools.com website offers a virtual online church hosted in the United Kingdom. On entry you are represented by an avatar and can talk with other visitors as well as wander around the church and crypt. The virtual church site would work better, if it did not involve a opening so many new browser windows and if the graphics scaled to higher resolution monitors instead of staying small. But if you are willing to put up with some annoyances the concept is interesting. The crypt appears to be an informal discussion area. Various avatars were in conversation when I visited. The discussion was a bit silly at times. At other times there were some interesting observations. If you show up when the server has reached its limits on avatars, you'll be represented by a ghost figure and can still wander around and listen. Check Your Connection Speed http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ Is your connection as good as your ISP claims? Sometimes that can be hard to tell. This website can test your connection and give you an idea of how fast it is. I used my ISP's connection test and then tested here. The two results were within 3% of each other. These two data points together give a pretty good indication of how fast the connection is. For another data point on your connection speed you can visit http://speedtest.dslreports.com. This site requires you to have the Sun Java Virtual Machine and does not work with the old Microsoft Virtual Machine. McAfee offers a speed test at http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer.asp for a third data point. McAfee's test results showed a connection that was about 20% slower than the above sources. For a final point of comparison I visited http://www.testmyspeed.com/ and clicked on my location. Several test sites were listed. Most returned 404 errors, but some worked. The test I used showed my connection speed to be about halfway between the highest speed (my ISP) and the lowest (McAfee). Such information is useful in diagnosing whether you are getting the connectivity you expected. | ||||
