Meta Tags
- Search Engine Rankings If you want to be higher in search engine rankings, you should consider the use of Meta Tags. Whether you are rated high or given adding weight is not a conscious decision of the spider or the search engine (except for maybe Yahoo), but is directly influenced by what YOU put in the keyword meta tag, the title, the
description, the body (the nearer the top the better), all of these
together, a combination of some of them, or none at all.
- Example of a Meta Tag
<meta name="description"
content="WEBnME.com specializes in offering webmaster resources">
<meta name="keywords"
content="CGI, Perl, Javascript, Java, HTML, ">
- Where to Put It Add the meta tags after your Title tag and before your closing Head tag
- Best Practices To attempt to get your website the highest ranking,
- identify one or two words that match your page topic exactly and that you can put into your page title,
- describe your site/page using a broader set of words,
- write a short sentence or paragraph that describes your site/page clearly and simply.
- put your most important key words in your title (but make sure your title still makes sense of course).
- put all the keywords that describe your site in this meta tag.
- don't repeat the same word over and over again, smart spiders ignore that.
- if there are two ways to spell a key word, such as "meta tag" and "meta-tag", put them in there because you never know how a client is going to search (this includes common misspellings).
- do them in lower case, even for proper nouns.
- if there are synonyms for your words, put them there too.
- make sure you use the most important key words near the top of your document, but try at all costs to keep them out of a list. Some spiders ignore lists.
- take that sentence or paragraph that you wrote and put it in the meta name=description tag. That way when you get listed, it shows up as the description for many search engines
- Myths
- Meta tags are not a magic solution - some spiders will ignore them and only use text in the title and body.
- Putting text at the bottom of a page using the same font color as the background color does not help rankings - most spiders ignore this type of text
- Cautions
Your best efforts at meta tag use may be worthless, if your server has a robots exclusion file (robots.txt) that blocks spiders.
- Build your Meta Tags Try Meta Tag Builder for an online tool to help you do your first meta tags.
