Office 2007 Compatibility with Office 2003

Office 2007 has many features not supported in Office 2003. For example, in Excel 2007 there is a much better pallet of colors available for use as fill colors. And of course, when an Office 2007 user saves a document it is going to end in a new file extension. Office 2007 Word documents are going to end with "docx" and Excel files are going to be "xlsx" and so on.

Office 2007 users are probably going to want their documents to retain these new features when they send them on to business associates, family and friends. The trouble is that Office 2003 and Office XP won't be able to read them unless you install a file compatibility update. If you are using Office 2003 or Office XP, you'll want to have this update so that you can read files from the new version of Office.

Microsoft now has available "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats" at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx? familyid=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

Please pay attention to the warning to install all high priority updates for Office priot to this update. You'll be happier that way.

For earlier versions of Office, you can install this update, but you'll also have to do the workaround described in KB925451 at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925451

Once installed, you will be able to see Office 2007 documents in all their glory.
