Hook, Line, and Stinker http://www.space.com/news/columbia_coffins_040423.html Too often people believe what they see and read on websites without exercising any critical thinking or asking questions. Apparently, the news media leads the pack in not exercising thinking. The news media jumped on what they thought was an opportunity exploit grief without checking out the facts when they relied on photos from a website to publish what they thought were photos of flag-drapped coffins of war casualties. Now we know better. Space.com has just published an article, "Columbia Crew Coffins Mistaken for Caskets of U.S. Military Casualties," explaining that many of the images broadcast on TV and in newspapers were actually pictures of the coffins of the the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Was the news media blinded by their desire to encourage a negative view of the war or were they just negligent in not checking out the facts? We'll probably never know. If a lesson is to be learned, it has to be that information on the Internet is not always accurate. Don't fall victim to Internet Hoaxes and Myths. If you see a story or a photo that seems compelling, check it out first.
